We discovered three types of accommodations while traveling in Australia. The cheapest is camping. The next least expensive is staying in an Australian hostel. The third and most expensive method is staying in an Australian hotel. While you may expect the airfare to Australia to be your largest expense in your Australian adventure, you'll find hotels and resorts can add up quickly to be an equal or greater expense. You may wish to try an Australian hostel or camping instead as cheaper alternatives. While camping is the least expensive Australian accommodation type, it's also the least comfortable. If you're a rugged outdoors person, you may find camping a great bargain and fun. Australians as a whole seem to enjoy the rugged outdoors, so you'll find plenty of campsites throughout the country – many of them very nice. We found remarkably good campsites in the Australian outback. During the dry season, you may not even need a tent. Sleeping under the stars in the Australian outback is a singularly and thoroughly enjoyable experience. We rented much of our camping equipment – saving us the trouble of hauling a new camp-stove back home on the airplane.Hostels, while a less rugged accommodation type than camping, can be crowded and noisy. If you're a people person and enjoy a lot of interpersonal activity, then an Australian hostel may be a perfect fit. If you're not comfortable sharing toilet facilities with 10 or more people, all staying in the same room you're in, then hostels are not the lodging-type for you. Likewise, hostels don't offer a lot in extra amenities. Since Australians love to travel themselves and love to travel inexpensively, you're sure to find many cheap hostels all over the country for your stay there. The nicest Australian accommodations, of course, are the hotels. Hotels provide the extra facilities you expect when traveling – a hot shower, private toilets, and of course a comfortable bed. Likewise, you can choose to stay in an Australian resort. You'll find resorts much nicer than regular hotels with much better services. |
